Back-to-School, Making History…. while Some Things Stay the Same!

Back-to-School in 2020 is a time of collective concern that is different than any previous year in US history. Experts, including educators, sociologists, psychologists and epidemiologists, are all weighing in on what is best for our children regarding school in the midst of an ongoing pandemic. The answer may be that distance learning continues for many of the nation’s students. For those returning to traditional brick and mortar classrooms, masks and hand sanitizer may top the list of school supplies!

Never Changing – 

One element of school preparedness that has not changed: good vision – an important tool for learning! The most common school related vision complaint is difficulty seeing the board. Distance vision problems are most commonly caused by a refractive error (myopia or ‘nearsightedness’). Another complaint, difficulty seeing the letters on a page in a book, may be a different type of refractive error (hyperopia or ‘farsightedness’). These issues are readily correctible with eyeglasses.

Vision Matters – 

An article in The Journal of Ophthalmology estimates that 75 – 90% of all learning in the classroom comes either partially or wholly via the visual pathway. Considering this statistic, it is easy to understand how vision problems can adversely affect school performance. If your child complains of not being able to see well in school, an eye exam can determine if glasses are needed… not only for improved vision, but for improved learning!
