Jingle Bells and West Georgia Hearing Services

Jingle Bells Ring –
The first song broadcast from space was Jingle Bells! Astronauts from Gemini 6 sent a report to Mission Control that included the highly popular Christmas song. Still popular today, the song evokes high-spirited fun, and brings to mind scenes of racing sleighs decked out in strands of bells! In fact, the cadence of the chorus mimics the rhythm of the ringing sleigh bells:
“Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all the way!”
Accident Prevention –
Actual historic sleigh bells served a much more serious purpose than mere musical fun and carriage décor. In the early 19th century, as the population of the United States of America increased, roadways became more heavily trafficked by carriages and sleighs. While carriage wheels and horses’ hooves upon the road made raucous noise announcing their approach; sleighs were often nearly silent and the snow muffled their horses’ hooves. Many pedestrians’ lives were likely spared by the auditory warning of the sleigh bells alerting them to get out of the way! The familiar noise also alerted other sleighs to slow down and share the road safely.
So Important –
Our hearing is a precious sense that not only allows us to enjoy Christmas carols, but also warns us of danger and alerts us to be aware of our surroundings. Traffic noises may sometimes be a nuisance, but a timely honk of the horn may be just the “head’s up” that another driver needs to refocus their attention. Such an important sense deserves care and maintenance if it shows signs of trouble.
