July 4th is only a few days away and West Georgia Eye Care Center wishes you the happiest and safest of Independence Days! How are planning on celebrating? If your plans include fireworks, make certain the plans are to enjoy a professional display and stay away from consumer fireworks (the off-the-shelf buy them yourself type). There is no such thing as safe consumer fireworks and we have some links to the experts so you can research it yourself!

The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) reports that “Americans spend hundreds of millions of dollars annually on consumer fireworks, which cause more than 9,000 injuries a year. With the Fourth of July holiday just a week away, they are reminding the public that fireworks are not toys but incendiary devices that can cause devastating eye injuries.”

The AAO has prepared a short animated video to remind kids that fireworks may look like toys but are really dangerous and potentially blinding device. Gather the kids around and click below:

“Fireworks may be advertised like toys. You may think you know how to handle them safely. But fireworks injure thousands of Americans every year. Playing with fireworks can blind you or your loved ones. Leave fireworks to the professionals this year.”

ALERT:  The links below from the AAO are for adults. They have sobering messages to help keep us mindful of fireworks risks:
