Shark Week 2021, Light Rays and LASIK

This week is Shark Week and an opportunity to relate amazing shark facts to almost everything… even LASIK! A scientist studying shark vision remarked that his job was difficult because sharks don’t go to the eye doctor. While he was stating the obvious, the more important message is that there is still a lot to learn about sharks, and many other species, and how they see.
Sharks Glow –
Marine scientists are researching an amazing characteristic of some sharks to fluoresce. Fluorescence is the emission of light by something that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. Apparently, sharks have the ability to see their species’ fluorescence. Fluorescence in natural light is usually invisible to the human eye because it has a longer wavelength. The length and bending of light rays also have very important implications for the diagnosis and treatment of some human eye conditions.
